About Thornton, Colorado

Thornton is located on a high ridge 10 miles north of Denver and is home to more than 87,000 residents who enjoy scenic views of the mountains, neighboring cities and valleys.

Thornton was created in the early 1950s as part of a movement of planned development on the outskirts of Denver. Thornton today is one of the fastest growing suburban communities in the state. Residents enjoy affordable housing, outstanding education and numerous recreational opportunities. Between 1970 and 1980, Thornton had the highest percentage growth rate of all Colorado municipalities.

Typical of Denver and its suburbs, Thornton is a haven for the technology industry and many of its major employers are high-tech firms. Many Thornton residents commute via I-25, the 470 Beltway, Denver International Airport and the entire Denver metropolitan area.

Thornton is now home to 72,000 people. Major employers include TeleTech, Echo Star Communications, Fischer Imaging, and the Adams County School Districts.

Facilities in Thornton

Thornton has extensive city-owned parks system with more than 60 parks and facilities, including the new state-of-the-art Margaret W. Carpenter Recreation Center and the 18-hole Thorncreek Golf Course. Nearly all of the numerous lakes, creeks and irrigation canals have been or will be developed as parks or bike / jogging trails.

Numerous annual events are hosted by the city, including Thornton Annual Festival Days, Thorntonfest and the Thornton Harvest Fest at Community Park.

Thornton Schools

Students are served primarily by Adams County school districts #1 and #12, though students in some areas are served by Mapleton School District #1. A higher than average number of Thornton’s adult residents hold college degrees
